Stamford Boys Smash 39-Year-Old Swim Record

STAMFORD, Conn. -- The Newfield Seals, the youth swim team from the Stamford-based Newfield Swim and Tennis Club, had a record-breaking day Wednesday in a victory over Innis Arden Club. The boys relay team of Ben Feldman, Nick Handali, Colin Donovan and William Smelser finished the relay in 2:30.94 and broke a pool record that had stood since 1972.

Their record-setting race capped a convincing win for Newfield, as they beat Innis Arden, 311-209. Newfield's divers set the tone, winning that portion of the meet 43-17. Winning divers included:

• Wiley Schmidt, Lana Schmidt (10 & under boys and 10 & under girls)

• Caroline Feldman (12 & under girls)

• Kyle O'Donnell (14 & under boys)

• Sam Sterman, Annie Archibald (17 & under boys and girls)

The relay boys were not the only ones who broke records. Jenna Handali broke a pool record with a time of 25.09 seconds in the 8 & under girls 25-yard backstroke. Jenna's brother, Nick Handali, broke two pool records -- swimming to a time of 1:28:97 in the 12 & under 100 individual medley and 47:81 in the 12 & under boys 50 breast stroke.

After losing their first two meets of the season, Newfield has now won two meets in a row. Newfield defeated Long Ridge last week.
