Ruth 15u's Wins on Heroics

Jeff Cortese made sure the Stamford 15u Babe Ruth team continues to ride high. After capturing the state title last week, Stamford headed to Quincy, Mass., for the New England regional tournament. Their opening round game against Portland, Maine, may have been the most exciting yet.

Cortese came through in the clutch with a two-strike, two-out, two-run, walk-off double, giving Stamford a 3-2 victory. Jason LoRusso singled to start the seventh and Greg DelMazio walked. Kyle DeVico grounded out to push the runners into scoring position to set up Cortese's dramatics. Portland broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh to put Stamford in the hole.

Danny O'Leary pitched six strong innings, allowing just three hits and two runs. Luis Lopez picked up the win in relief. Stamford, now in the winner's bracket, will take on the winner of Cranston, R.I., and Western Mass. on Thursday evening.
