Stamford Baseball Team Begins Little League Journey

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – North Stamford Little League will attempt to win its fourth straight District 1 championship when the tournament begins Tuesday. North Stamford plays Darien American in the opening game of the tournament at the Little League Field in Springdale.

The District 1 tournament includes six teams from Stamford, including Springdale, National Lione, Stamford American, Federal and Northrop. The field also includes two teams from Darien and Ridgefield, along with single teams from Norwalk, Weston, Wilton and Rowayton. All of the teams from the county and the nation are hoping the journey takes them in August to Williamsport, Pa., site of the Little League World Series.

North Stamford and Darien American are the only teams to play Tuesday. The rest of the teams swing into action later this week.

The 14 teams are divided into two seven-team brackets. The teams play each team in their bracket in a round-robin format. The top four teams advance to the quarterfinals beginning July 8. North Stamford defeated National Lione, 9-5, in last year’s District  1 championship game. The District 1 winner advances to the Section 1 tournament. There are two Sectional tournaments in Connecticut, and the winners from each square off for the state championship.

Norwalk Little League’s national champions from 1952 will be honored at Tuesday’s opening ceremonies. The ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Schedules are available on the District 1 website.
