Johnson Waltzes to 3rd Women's Title

Debbie Johnson rediscovered her swing for the final round of the Stamford Amateur Golf Championship. That meant bad news for the rest of the players in the women's field.

Johnson won her third city championship Sunday at E. Gaynor Brennan. She shot a final-round 74 and won by 19 strokes over runner-up Jen Kaplan. Johnson entered the final round with a six shot lead and was the only woman to shoot under 80 Sunday.

"I didn't have a very good swing for the first two rounds,'' Debbie said. "That's all I focused on, making good swings."

Johnson said winning the city title never gets old. "I always feel like it's the Ryder Cup,'' she said. "Everyone in Stamford pays attention to it." Johnson won the Southern New England Women's Golf Association stroke play championship last month, and will play in the state Women's Amateur later this month. "My game has been pretty good this year, better than it has been in a long time,'' she said. "My short game is a lot better."

Alberta Bove captured the women's handicap championship by 12 strokes over Cappy Gentile. Alberta shot a net 72 in the final round. She entered the final 18 holes with a five-shot lead and coasted to victory.
