Golfer Ballo Takes 2nd in Maine Tournament

STAMFORD, Conn. – Stamford golfer Mike Ballo Jr. finished second Saturday at the Greater Bangor Open in Maine, falling in a playoff to Jerry Speirs on the first playoff hole.

Ballo, who will be in the field for the Connecticut Open that begins Monday, made a charge with a final round 64 that left him at 7-under-par 200 for the 54-hole tournament. He finished tied for the lead at the end of regulation with Speirs, who shot a final round 67.

Ballo's tee shot on the first sudden death hole hit a tree. Speirs' shot landed in the fairway. Speirs' approach shot nestled about a foot from the cup, and Ballo was on the fringe in two. His long downhill putt missed the mark, and Speirs tapped in for the victory.

Ballo, who plays out of Woodway in Darien, shot 68-68-64 in the tournament. He begins the Connecticut Open on Monday at 10:10 a.m. at Brooklawn in Fairfield. Ballo, a former star at Trinity Catholic and St. John's, made his professional debut last year. He won his first professional tournament earlier this year in Florida.
