Updated: STAMFORD, Conn. — Stamford High School was evacuated Tuesday afternoon because of a bomb threat, and students were dismissed early, police said.

Stamford High student Christian Hamilton said students were ordered to evacuate the building in an announcement over the school's intercom system. He said teachers were unaware of what was happening.

"What I was told was that there was a bomb threat. We were all told to evacuate," Hamilton said while waiting for a ride at the nearby Dunkin' Donuts.

When police arrived, students and staff were told that it would be at least two hours before the school building would be cleared, he said.

Sharon Beadle, a spokeswoman for the Stamford schools, said a threatening call was made to Stamford High School at about 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

"As a precautionary measure, all students were evacuated according to our emergency plan," she said in a statement. "Police are on the scene and investigating the situation. To minimize the time spent outside, buses were dispatched early to pick up students."

Another student, an 11th-grader, said the students were just told to leave but given no information on what was happening.

"They just told us to evacuate, nothing else," said the student, who declined to be named.

Police cars were blocking the entrance to the school as well as to nearby Hillandale Avenue.

The students were sent outside, and buses are arriving for them to be dismissed because of the cold. Students were walking home and through the neighborhoods after the dismissal.

The police department’s bomb squad is at the school.
