Stamford Girl Plants a Winner

STAMFORD, Conn. — Hannah Schager was one of some 900 Stamford students who participated in this year’s Lettuce Challenge. She didn’t think she had a chance of being named Best in Show. But after scouring through the display Thursday, her plant was not with the rest at the Stamford Government Center.

That is when she heard her father calling her to the front of the display. Sure enough, her lettuce plant was there with a blue ribbon on it. “We were just coming by to see my plant,” Hannah said, still surprised that she won.

Each student was given a seed or a small bulb and a filled pot to plant it in. The students then watered, cared for, talked to and “did whatever it took for the lettuce to grow” for six weeks, said Kay Marcus of the Stamford Garden Club, which sponsored the event.

After six weeks of growing, each of the 54 classes chose the best three to submit for judging. The lettuce plants were examined for color, density and compactness so it looked as if it was grown outside in a garden, said judge Beazie Larned.

“They did a terrific job,” Larned said.

The lettuce plants will be on display in the Stamford Government Center through Sunday.
