Mold issues continue to plague an elementary school in Stamford.

There have been complaints of mold escalation at other schools in Stamford, but it came to a head this week at the Westover Elementary School, during a PTO meeting between parents and school officials.

The outbreak continues to spread, although contractors have been called in to kick off cleanup efforts. The issue has become so prevalent that a Board of Education member reportedly said it was an “emergency-type situation.”

It is believed that the mold has been caused by wet and humid weather in the recent months.

As a result of the districtwide mold outbreak, the district has begun offering online updates on cleaning efforts at 11 of its schools. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has also been notified of the outbreak as a precaution by schools Superintendent Earl Kim.

According to an update from the district on Oct. 12, KT Murphy and Westover elementary schools each have mold in the auditorium, several hallways and classrooms. Mold has been reported in nearly a dozen other schools. The district has spent $364,431.50 in cleanup efforts since the initial outbreak.
