Stamford Voters Head To The Polls Today

STAMFORD, Conn. — Stamford voters will be heading to the polls today to cast their ballots for president, U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, as well as for state offices and local issues.

The two main contenders for the U.S. presidency are Democratic incumbent Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

The state will see a new senator as Republican Linda McMahon and U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy (D-CT5) face off to replace Independent Sen. Joseph Lieberman, who is retiring.

U.S. Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT4) is looking for a third term in Congress, while Republican Steve Obsitnik is trying to take the seat.

Both state Senate seats representing Stamford are up for grabs, with Republican incumbent L. Scott Frantz running against Democratic challenger Dan Dauplaise in the 36th district, and Democratic incumbent Carlo Leone running against Republican Barry Michelson in the 27th district.

The state Representative races in Stamford are as follows, with the incumbent listed first:

144th District: Republican Michael Molgano and Democrat Michael Pollard

145th District: Democrat Patricia Billie Miller and Republican Francky Trofort

146th District: Democrat Gerald Fox III and Republican Eva Maldonado

147th District: Democrat William Tong and Republican Nicola Tarzia

148th District: Democrat Dan Fox and Republican Phil Balestriere

149th District: Republican Livvy Floren and Democrat John Blankley

There are three available seats on the city’s Board of Education, two of which have to go to Republicans. The candidates are incumbents Polly Rauh (D), Jerry Pia (R) and Lorraine Olson (R), and challengers Dolores Burgess (D) and Jonathan Hoch (R).

The Charter Revision Questions are as follows:

1. Revise the charter to make certain technical, grammatical, administrative and procedural changes and revisions.

2. Revise the charter to create a single combined fire department including the following:

1. Creating a single fire department composed of career and volunteer firefighters with a single chief and a single fire marshal.

2. Creating the positions of assistant fire chief for career services and assistant fire chief for volunteer services.

3. Acknowledging that the volunteer departments are an important component of the new combined department.

3) Revise the charter to establish, by charter, the Water Pollution Control Authority and to ensure that the provisions concerning the WPCA comply with State law.

4) Revise the charter to create a Historic Preservation Advisory Commission.

5) Create, by charter, a Board of Ethics and mandate a City Code of Ethics.

6) Revise the charter to clarify that the Board of Finance’s authority is limited to fiscal matters only.

7) Revise the charter to limit the service of any one individual to a single elected position, excluding constables.

8) Revise the charter to add a preamble to the charter concerning citizens’ rights.

9) Revise the charter to change the term of office for constables from two years to four years.
