Chaz Michael Harris, 23, of 202 Soundview Ave. was charged with reckless driving, engaging police in pursuit and resisting a police officer.
The incident began at about 9 p.m. when a man entered and exited an East Main Street restaurant without ordering any food and asking staff when the restaurant would close, police said. Police were called, and when officers arrived they spotted the man in a Hyundai as it pulled out to go eastbound on East Main Street.
An officer activated his lights and sirens and pursued the vehicle, police said. The driver stopped, but when the officer got out of his cruiser, he drove away and led them on a chase through a number of side streets before turning on Maher Road, police said. The pursuit ended when the driver reached the dead end of the street, police said.
The situation escalated from there when the suspect refused orders to stay in his vehicle, forcing the first officer on the scene to pull out his handgun and order him back in his vehicle, police said. When a second officer arrived, they were both able to tackle the man to the ground and after a struggle they were able to handcuff him, police said.
There was no reason given for the man's behavior, police said.
