Stamford, like all of the surrounding communities, is experiencing a sharp rise in motor vehicle thefts. Police said that last month the department received 58 reports of thefts from motor vehicles, and in all but one of those cases the owners admitted that they had left their car unlocked, police said.
In some of the cases reported in other communities, thieves will often hit entire neighborhoods at once. In other instances, they will steal cars that have been left unlocked with the keys inside, or may even enter homes that have been left unlocked.
