"Halloween is a fun and exciting time for kids," the department said in a post on its Facebook page. "Here are a few safety tips to help make it a safe experience:"
- Costumes should fit properly and be bright. If the clothing is dark, add reflective tape.
- Trick-or-treaters should use a flashlight or glow sticks after dark.
- Use crosswalks and wait for traffic signals while crossing streets.
- Parents should set a curfew.
- Stay on sidewalks or streets. Do not cut through backyards.
- Children should never go into a house or car of a stranger.
- When children are old enough to go trick-or-treating without adult supervision, they should NOT go alone. Stay in groups.
- Only go to houses with a porch light on.
- Adults should inspect all candy before it is eaten. Unwrapped candy should be thrown away. If any candy appears suspicious, notify police.
- Young children should be accompanied by an adult.
Masks can limit eyesight and face makeup can sometimes cause adverse reactions on the skin. Consider only wearing masks while approaching a door and pre-testing face makeup on a child's arm for about 30 minutes.
Anyone who may need to contact the police department for non emergency matters should call 203-977-4444. Those dealing with more urgent matters should call 911.
