Police have not released the names of the 20-year-old Stamford resident, who was the driver, and the 23-year-old passenger, who died. Another passenger, a 20-year-old, was treated and released from Stamford Hospital, police said.
The accident occurred at 1:13 a.m. Saturday when a 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck slammed into a tree near the intersection of Hope Street and Barnstable Lane, police said. The pickup truck was northbound on Hope Street at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash, police said.
As the truck approached Hartford Avenue, the driver began to lose control and crossed into the southbound lane, police said. The truck then skidded into a tree off the west side of the road at the junction of Barnstable Lane, police said.
On Saturday, the site became a memorial as flowers were placed at the tree while some debris from the crash was still present.
The crash scene is south of the Springdale train station, near the Riverbend office park.
This investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact the police department's C.A.R.S. division at 203-977-4712.
The investigation is being conducted by Officer Jeffrey Booth and Sgt. Andrew Gallagher.
