STAMFORD, Conn. -- A 24-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man exchanged about a dozen shots in a wild gunfight Saturday night that left both of them wounded and the vehicle the man was a passenger in riddled with .44-magnum bullets from her handgun, Stamford police said.

The incident is still under investigation, and no charges have been filed, Stamford police Capt. Richard Conklin said.

Police received numerous calls about multiple gunshots near 1 Lawn Ave. at 11:21 p.m. Saturday.

When officers arrived, the shooters had fled the scene, police said. But officers found eight .44-caliber shell casings in the area and four .380-caliber shell casings, police said. Bullets also struck nearby apartments, but no injuries were reported, Conklin said.

"That is a very, very powerful round, something we don't really see around here very often," Conklin said about the .44-caliber bullets. Officers are trying to determine what precisely sparked the shootout, he said.

Officers reported a break in the case at about 1 a.m. Sunday, when St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport reported that it was treating a 23-year-old man who had been shot through his right hip with the bullet exiting his body, Conklin said. The man was struck by a second round in his right arm, with the bullet lodging in his shoulder area, police said.

Parked near 123 Montauk Drive in Stamford, a bullet-riddled Toyota Scion was found that officers believe was occupied by a passenger during the gunfight, police said.

The owner-operator of the vehicle, Britteny Manning, 28, of 123 Montauk Drive, was charged with operating an uninsured and unregistered vehicle, police said.

Officers believe she was present at the shootout and drove the 23-year-old man away from the scene, Conklin said. Police believe he wasn't driven to Bridgeport in the Scion, he said.

Police also found blood in the vehicle, which is being examined for further evidence, Conklin said.

The second shooter, who police identified as a 24-year-old woman, was shot once in her left arm, with the bullet passing through her arm, police said. She initially did not go to the hospital but eventually was treated and released from Stamford Hospital, Conklin said.
