STAMFORD, Conn. — A Stamford teen had more than chips and chocolate bars in his bag when he returned to a residential institution in Litchfield where he's incarcerated. There was also a 9mm handgun that his stepfather placed there because he was tired of carrying it on a shopping trip, Stamford Police said.

The 14-year-old had returned home Tuesday for a visit, Stamford police Sgt. Simon Blanc said. Then during a shopping trip with his mother and stepfather to pick up snacks for his return to the Litchfield facility, the stepfather placed the gun in the bag because it was uncomfortable to wear, Blanc said.

When the boy returned to the facility, the weapon was discovered during a search of his bag, Blanc said.

Both the 14-year-old and the mother denied knowing the handgun was in the bag, Blanc said.

Police are investigating the incident.
