A pedestrian was struck on Spring Street near Bedford Street just before 2 a.m. and the driver drove away, but not before the man's friends acted, police said.
"One of the friend's yelled 'Stop that car' and a (another) friend jumped on the hood of the car to stop the car," Sgt. Jennifer Lynch said. However, the driver kept going until a sergeant a short distance away noticed the car with its unlikely passenger and pulled it over after a short chase.
The sergeant ordered the man off the hood of the car and then noticed the vehicle had some front end damage.
The driver, 24-year-old Vladimir Ruales-Espinoza of 69 Cove Road, appeared to be intoxicated and was unsteady on his feet, Lynch said. He also refused to complete the field sobriety tests as well as the Breathalyzer test.
Ruales-Espinoza was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, operating a motor vehicle under the influence, no insurance, driving with a suspended license, evading responsibility and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.
The pedestrian was taken to the hospital suffering from injuries to his hand and leg.
