The driver went out of control on a curve near Progress Drive at 4:55 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Speed appears to have been a factor in this crash, police said.

A 2016 Hyundai Sonata was traveling west on Stillwater Avenue but was unable to negotiate the curve in the roadway, police said. The car crossed over the eastbound lane of Stillwater Avenue and struck a tree at the northeast corner of Progress Drive, police said.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police did not release the identity of the driver.

Anyone who may have witnessed this crash or has any information that may be helpful is asked to contact the Stamford Police Department's Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad at 203-977-4712.

The crash is being investigated by Officers Jeffrey Booth and Andrew Czubatyj.
