An eagle-eyed Stamford Police Officer busted a man illegally rummaging through a parked car overnight as investigations into a recent rash of larcenies of vehicles continues.

Shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Monday night, an officer on patrol in Stamford spotted a person rummaging through a vehicle on 4th Street, near the intersection of Summer Street, police said.

According to police, due to several larcenies from vehicles in the area recently, the officer stopped the man - later identified as Stamford resident Caleb Newell, 22 - to investigate the suspicious scene further, which determined that Newell was not the owner of the vehicle, who was contacted and confirmed such.

Newell was arrested at the scene and charged with third-degree burglary. He is currently being held on a $25,000 appearance bond and was scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday morning.

“The Stamford Police would like to remind individuals to lock their vehicles and when they do lock them please do not leave anything of value in plain sight. The city has experienced numerous car burglaries of unlocked vehicles and when valuables are in plain view we have also experienced an increase in windows being smashed by thieves.”
