Joseph Skrivan Sr., 81, Stamford Engineer, WWII Vet

STAMFORD, Conn. – Joseph F. Skrivan Sr., a longtime Stamford resident, died Jan. 26 at Stamford Hospital, with his children by his side. He was 81.

Born Oct. 25, 1931, in Baltimore, he was the son of John Francis and Helen Marie Skrivan. He earned bachelor's, master’s and doctorate degrees from Johns Hopkins University.

A Stamford resident for 50 years, Skrivan worked as a chemical engineer in research and development for American Cyanamid and Cytec Industries. He was the holder of several chemical process patents. In 1993, he retired as director of engineering, process development and scientific services from Cytec.

Skrivan was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Josephine C. Skrivan. He is survived by a sister, Helen Claire (Charles) Berger, of Towson, Md.; a son, Joseph F. (Lisa) Skrivan Jr., of Salt Lake City; five daughters, Marge M. (Ken) Fisher, Elizabeth A. (David) Chuhta, both of Trumbull, Katherine M. (Peter) Sandgren, of Norwich, Joan E. (Paul) Lombardo, and Ginny C. (Will) Vicinus, both of Stamford; and 17 grandchildren.

Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home in Stamford. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Gabriel Church in Stamford. Burial will follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery in Stamford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
