Women Tell Malloy Education Creates Jobs

STAMFORD, Conn. — Fairfield County businesswomen gave Gov. Dannel Malloy advice Wednesday morning on how to create more jobs in Connecticut. Stamford dentist Tatiana Barton suggested starting a dental technicians program at the University of Connecticut.

“They have an employment rate of 100 percent nationwide,” Barton said. She added that dentists now send patients out of state to get work done by technicians.

The governor said the state is inviting 50 scientists from around the world to come to UConn to teach and do research. He said the goal is to create bioscience jobs here by having the newest discoveries take place in Connecticut. Malloy met in Stamford Wednesday with members of the Women’s Business Development Center.

Southport businesswoman Denise Amuso of Troy Fine Art also stressed the importance of education. Amuso said that she needs people with manufacturing skills, such as cutting glass, but that the interns she gets don’t have those skills because of a negative light cast on manufacturing.

In addition to the 30 or so women representing different businesses and organizations in Fairfield County, Malloy was joined by Catherine Smith of the state Department of Economic and Community Development. The discussion was the latest stop for Malloy and Smith on their jobs tour through Connecticut.

The Women’s Business Development Center addresses the need for entrepreneurial training and services for women.
