Stanley Evanchik, Trucker and Traveler

Funeral services were held Wednesday for Stanley Evanchik, who died at his home Nov. 25 at age 86 with his wife, Cecelia, by his side. Evanchik was born in Stamford on June 7, 1924. He spent nearly half his life – 42 years – working as a truck driver for Valerie Transportation before retiring in 1986. His retirement gave him time to pursue his passion for traveling. He and his wife together saw much of the United States and 26 countries.

Evanchik was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He escaped a sinking ship by transferring to a life raft and was rescued by the Canadian Navy. Evanchik was a member of St. Mary's Russian Orthodox Church, the place of his baptism. He also was a member of the Teamster's Local 191 Retiree Group and the Belltown Senior Group.

Evanchik is survived by his wife; daughters Barbara and husband Donald Ratzel of Melbourne, Fla., and Christine and husband Thomas Noonan of Shelton; son Arthur of Stamford; and four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a great-great grandson, a sister, and several nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by a daughter, three sisters and a brother.
