Stamford Worker Pleads Guilty to Payroll Theft

Renee Bragg, 42, pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $150,000 from Omega Engineering Inc. of Stamford before Senior U.S. District Judge Warren W. Eginton in Bridgeport on Thursday. Bragg, a Hamden resident, had been employed as a payroll specialist with the company before her arrest, a statement from U.S. Attorney David B. Fein said.

From August 2006 to July 2010, Bragg falsified payroll spreadsheets to overpay herself by $150,689 in salary and $11,528 in Social Security and Medicare taxes, the statement said. She received an additional $500 to $3,313 each week that she altered the spreadsheets.

Each week, Omega employees submit written timesheets to a payroll specialist, including Bragg. She would then alter the timesheets making it so she had worked more hours. She also manipulated Omega’s composite report so it would not show an increase in pay, the release says.

Sentencing was scheduled for Sept. 16. Bragg faces a maximum term imprisonment of 20 years and a fine of up to $324,432. She has also agreed to pay restitution in the amount of $162, 216.
