Stamford Radio Shack Robbed at Gunpoint

A man robbed the Radio Shack on Elm Street at gunpoint Monday night. The man took a drawer out of a cash register and shoved it into a tan pillowcase, Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin said Tuesday.

The man left and got into a dark-colored Nissan Altima waiting up the street. Nobody was hurt, Conklin says. The amount taken was not released.

The robber, who used a silver handgun, was described as a 6-foot black male wearing black boots, black ski mask and a black sweatshirt. The description matched that of the suspect in a number of similar robberies, Conklin says. Similar robberies have also taken place with two suspects, he said.

The similar robberies include at a Subway sandwich shop, a gas station, a convenience store and several times at a Radio Shack, Conklin said. Radio Shacks have been targeted, including five or six times in Stamford over the past year, he said. A robbery was attempted a few days earlier, but the door had been locked and the suspect was unable to enter and ran off, Conklin said.

Police have met with Radio Shack personnel to discuss ways to make the stores more secure, he said. The suggestions include depositing money more frequently so less cash is in the register and adding alarm systems.
