Stamford Organization Continues Work in Haiti

STAMFORD, Conn. — Stamford-based AmeriCares is still sending medical supplies and other aid to Haiti two years after the Caribbean nation was devastated by a massive earthquake. Hundreds of thousands continue to live in dismal situations, Curt Welling, chief executive officer and president of AmeriCares, said in a statement.

“With so many survivors crowded together in squalid conditions, Haiti’s health crisis today deserves as much attention as the initial disaster," Welling said.

The organization has sent about 950 shipments to more than 100 hospitals and health clinics throughout Haiti since the earthquake hit on Jan. 12, 2010. AmeriCares received so much financial support after the earthquake it was able to open an office and warehouse in Port-au-Prince.

AmeriCares is currently sending supplies to cholera treatment centers. The disease is spread by contaminated water and the most seriously ill patients can die of dehydration in as few as 10 hours.

The two-year report of AmeriCares' efforts in Haiti can be found here.
