Stamford Man Arrested in Baby's Death

STAMFORD, Conn. — A 22-year-old Stamford parolee was arrested Tuesday night and charged with manslaughter in the death of a 3-month-old baby boy. Osvaldo Romero was being held on a $1 million bond, and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 20.

Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin gave the following account:

The baby’s 19-year-old mother called 911 around 1 p.m. on Friday, saying the baby was in distress. An ambulance transported the baby to Stamford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A medical examiner's autopsy found injuries to the baby that were not consistent with what the mother said had happened. Police met with the mother and she admitted that Romero was watching the baby Friday morning and called her to pick him up at around 11 a.m. because the baby was acting strangely. She returned home with the baby and made up a story before calling for help.

In addition to manslaughter, Osvaldo was charged with risk of injury to a minor and his parole was rescinded. The case is still under investigation, and Romero may face more charges. Conklin said there may also be other arrests and that the police are also looking into the relationship between Romero and the mother.
