Stamfords Kelly Merole has always been environmentally conscious. She used to go around her house, shutting off the lights on her parents. Now she is a member of the Environmental Club at Trinity Catholic High School, and she designed a pictorial postmark that stresses the Stamford Post Office's slogan of "Easy to Be Green."
We all have to lend a hand, Merole said. Her design was unveiled Wednesday at the Springdale Post Office. The first person to use her postmark was Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia, who commended the high school senior for following a commitment she made at a young age and encouraged others to follow her example.
Pavia was happy to be a part of the ceremony because one of his goals is to make Stamford more environmentally friendly. He announced that the city has increased its recycling by 24 percent in the past year-and-a-half but said would he like to do even better.
Stamford also got its first look at the 16 Go Green Stamps the U.S. Postal Service released to promote the environment. The stamps feature different actions for people to go green, including walking instead of driving and putting on a sweater instead of turning up the heat. The Go Green Stamps were released in April by the U.S. Postal Service to serve as the social awareness stamps of the year, the post offices website says.
The Go Green Stamps show how easy it can be, Jim Simmons, Stamfords postmaster, said denouncing Kermit the Frogs famous claim that it's not easy being green.
