Registration Starts for Stamford Lego Expo

Registration opens Monday, Dec. 20, for the 4th Annual Jr. FIRST Lego League Expo. The Expo will be held in Stamford on Feb. 13, and coaches and mentors are encouraged to register their teams as soon as possible, as the event is limited to 25 teams.

Coaches who haven’t yet put together a team needn’t worry, said Peter Dowling, co-founder of Stamford Robotics. “You still have time to get teams formed and start working just after the holidays,” Dowling said. Stamford Robotics will assist individuals with team formation, he said, adding that the organization also can help provide mentors, if needed, for teams that already have been established.

Stamford Robotics is the promoter of Jr. FLL in this area. The program, which serves children ages 6 to 9, was established by For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, or FIRST, which seeks to build an interest in science among youngsters.

This year’s third annual Jr. FLL Expo attracted the likes of U.S. Sen.-elect Richard Blumenthal and Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia, among other dignitaries, who toured the display area and listened as youngsters explained their projects.

The 2011 expo will once again be held at the Academy of Information Technology and Engineering. It’s theme will be “Engineering Meets Medicine.” Showcased projects will consist of Lego models youngsters build related to the theme. For example, a team might construct a model demonstrating the operative components of a medical instrument or particular body part.
