Margaret Smegal, School Employee

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday for Margaret "Marge" Smegal at the Basilica of St. John the Evangelist. Smegal died at her Stamford home Nov. 23 at age 85.

Smegal, a Stamford native, was born here Dec. 9, 1924, and lived here all her life. She retired a year ago this month after working for 36 years as an administrative assistant for the Board of Education. Smegal, among her latest assignments, had been a familiar and welcoming face at Westhill High School and at the evening adult education program at Rippowam.

She was a "fixer-upper" whose skills with gadgets and tools came in handy at work and at home. Smegal enjoyed outings at Cummings Beach, fishing on Long Island Sound and supporting her grandchildren in their activities.

Smegal is survived by daughter Patricia and husband Charles Gruel of Stamford; son Stephen and wife Jamye Smegal of Stamford; and three grandchildren and a brother.

She was predeceased by her husband, Stephen E. Smegal; and an infant daughter as well as eight brothers and sisters.
