Original story: STAMFORD, Conn. – The sister of the Stamford woman shot to death last week after a high-speed car chase through Washington, D.C., is seeking custody of her niece, who was in the backseat of her sister’s car during the ordeal, CTPost.com reported.
Miriam Carey, a 34-year-old dental hygienist from Stamford, led police on the chase around the nation’s capital on Oct. 3. Her sister, Valarie Carey, has asked a Stamford judge for custody of Erica Francis, her 14-month-old niece, according to the report.
Erica Francis is currently in the custody of her father, who is estranged from Miriam Carey’s family, the report said. Court records show that Valerie Carey has said he will not bring the baby to visit the Carey family in Brooklyn and that they don’t know where she is, the CTPost report said.
Miriam Carey was driving last Thursday with Erica in the backseat when she used her vehicle to crash into a White House barricade, which led to the chase around one of Washington’s highest security areas. She also struck a police officer while fleeing, reports said.
Her sisters told Matt Lauer on the “Today" show earlier this week that she was being treated for postpartum depression under a doctor’s supervision and was being taken off her medication.
