Acting Chief To Lead Stamford Fire

STAMFORD, Conn. — Deputy Chief Antonio Conte was promoted to acting fire chief of Stamford Fire and Rescue by Mayor Michael Pavia on Tuesday afternoon. He takes over for Robert McGrath, who retired after serving Stamford for the past 11 years as fire chief, a statement from the mayor’s office said.

“It’s definitely an honor,” Conte said in a phone interview. Although he has served Stamford Fire and Rescue for the past 38 years, he says his experience dates to 1960. Conte’s father, Michael Conte, was also a firefighter. Conte followed in his father's footsteps and has been involved since he was a “youngster.”

“I owe all of the credit in the world to my father,” he said. Conte will serve as acting chief until the city hires a permanent replacement. McGrath announced his retirement plans last week, the statement said. Interviews are currently taking place for the next chief of Stamford Fire and Rescue, the release said.

“We are grateful for the many years of dedicated service and fine leadership by Chief McGrath and wish him continued success and happiness,” Pavia said in a statement.

During his 38 years of service to Stamford, Conte held a variety of positions, including firefighter and fire captain and was named deputy chief in 2000, the release said. Part of his responsibilities as deputy chief included overseeing the training division for the department. 

Conte, a lifelong city resident, said in the statement, I “look forward to continuing to serve and protect the citizens of Stamford.”
