Tag Sale Helps Stamford Teens Learn Skills

Putting together a tag sale is not easy. There are items to collect, sort and price, space to secure and work schedules to coordinate. Teenagers at Stamford’s Yerwood Center are learning those skills by organizing their own tag sale [at the center].

“You learn how to manage people, work as a team, how to handle money wisely and how to talk to customers,” said Adline Fleurancy, a 14-year-old Westhill High School freshman who is co-manager of the tag sale.

Isaac Etienne, 14 and a sophomore at Stamford High School, is the other co-manager. Volunteers include 14-year-old freshman Alan Alexis and 17-year-old senior Daulton Peart, both of Stamford High School, and Kyle Velazquez, a 15-year-old sophomore at Westhill.

“It’s good experience,” said Kyle, who’s considering a career in advertising. “This is good practice for it.”

Fifty percent of the proceeds from the tag sale will go  toward a Yerwood scholarship fund.

The sale items are modestly priced. There are scores of books, all for $1. That includes paperback, hardcover, fiction and nonfiction. There also are $2 picture frames, $1 dishes, toys for 50 cents and cassettes and CDs for 25 cents.

“We try to keep it at a low rate,” said Kyle. “Some of the stuff is used, so we try to keep that in consideration.”

The young sellers also are offering incentives to people who donate items. “We use a chit system,” said Alan. “If you donated an item here, we give you a chit and with that you can get anything here [at] 10 percent off.”

To browse sale items, drop by the Yerwood Center, 90 Fairfield Ave., Friday afternoon (Dec. 17) or Saturday morning (Dec. 18).
