STAMFORD, Conn. -- SilverSource, formerly know as Senior Services of Stamford, held its annual charity golf outing on May 21, raising over $65,000 to support the organization's Ride to Wellness Medical Transportation Program.
The program is dedicated to ensuring affordable transportation for older adults so they can manage chronic conditions and maintain good health.
According to the AARP's Public Policy Institute, more than 20 percent of Americans age 65 and older don't drive.
Additionally, many aging drivers experience a decline in their vision but are reluctant to burden others by asking for rides to important medical and dental appointments. The impact: as our growing population ages, so does the need for seniors’ transportation. Attendees at the SilverSource charity golf outing understand that need.
“SilverSource provides many services to Stamford’s seniors, including consultations, counseling and outreach,” said Dr. Donald Case, chairman of the SilverSource board.
“One of our services is medical transportation. This organization gets people where they need to go to maintain their health,” he said.
This year’s tournament was held in honor of Stamford’s recently retired Judge Gerald M. Fox, Jr., who served for 24 years as probate judge in Stamford. He was chosen for his service both on the bench and off, having served as board member for numerous nonprofit organizations, including Board of Governors for the Connecticut Board of Higher Education, chairman for the Stamford Charter Revision Commission and on the board of directors at SilverSource.
Currently, Fox is one of the longest serving board members at SilverSource, providing counsel to the organization as it’s evolved to the growing organization it is today. Stamford Mayor, David Martin, recognized the guest of honor by naming May 21 as Judge Gerald M. Fox Jr. Day.
“Today we are honoring a man who personifies public service, and raising funds to help needy seniors who rely on SilverSource to be there as a safety net,” said Jevera Hennessey, who was, along with her husband Bill, the tournament’s honoree in 2014. “I look forward to this fun golf outing every year. I’m proud to support SilverSource, which fills a need no other organizations fills."
