STAMFORD, Conn. -- The Ferguson Library’s major fundraiser, "A Novel Affair" will honor Ernest Abate Thursday, April 14.

Abate is a community leader, partner at Abate & Abate and former speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives.

This is the sixth year for "A Novel Affair." Last year’s event drew 320 guests and raised about $160,000 for the library.

The library will honor Abate with the Ferguson Award for his longstanding service to the library and the wider Stamford community. Abate served five terms on the Ferguson’s Board of Trustees, four times as chair, and as director of the Herbert & Nell Singer Foundation. In the latter position, he was instrumental in getting the money to keep the main library open on Sundays.

“I’m deeply honored to be chosen for the Ferguson Award,” Abate said. “The Ferguson Library is one of the most important institutions in our community. It provides services without bias or judgment as to whom it serves. It serves everyone in the community irrespective of whether they have lived here their entire lives or are new residents in need of services. There is no other place that levels the playing field like the public library.”

Greg Caggainello, chair of the Ferguson Library’s Board of Trustees said: “I can’t think of anyone more deserving than Ernie. He has given so much to the Ferguson Library and to our city and state over the years. We’re delighted to recognize him for his dedication and commitment.”

The event will feature:

  • Small plates from some of Stamford’s most popular restaurants.
  • Live and silent auctions.
  • Wine and craft beer tastings.
  • A "Giving Bookshelf," to help the library put books on the shelf.

The event is from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the main library, DiMattia Building, One Public Library Plaza, Stamford.
