The cross-cultural documentary chronicles the journey of Grammy Award-winning composer Gabriela Lena Frank, as she became the first North American composer to score a symphony for an orchestra made up entirely of native Ecuadorian instruments.
Confirmed for national distribution on PBS and hailed by international media as an important project that promotes cultural exchange between two nations, "Compadre Huashayo" was written for the Orchestra of Andean Instruments in Quito-Ecuador. A classical piece brought to the screen in a 30-minute documentary film production, written and edited by renowned American filmmaker Aric Hartvig, winner of 11 Emmy awards.
The documentary focuses on music’s ability to connect different cultures, and was produced by the INTAKE Organization, a Stamford-based youth development and arts organization. The documentary screening will be followed by a concert performance by Gonzalo Cortés on classical flute and traditional woodwind instruments.
This event is free; dessert will be served. The Ferguson Library Main Library, DiMattia Building is at the corner of Bedford and Broad streets.
