STAMFORD, Conn. Steven Laguerre and Enky Redd have played basketball on the courts by Cove Island Park every day this summer, no matter how hot it was. Fortunately, the two friends can always duck into Terry Conners Ice Rink nearby to cool off.
This rink keeps us cool, Laguerre said following a game during this weeks heat wave.
It saves lives," Redd said. "I felt like I was going to pass out.
The two have played every day the past 10 summers at their neighborhood park, and taken advantage of their unofficial cooling center just as long.
But they're not the only ones seeking refuge from the heat at the rink, according to Lisa Surmaczewicz, the secretary at Terry Conners Rink. She said several people usually stop in every day after sunning on the beach or hanging out at the park.
Those looking to cool off can also attend one of the public skating sessions held Monday through Friday during the summer, as well as the several skating and hockey camps. Usually the public session draw about 25 skaters and the camps about the same number of kids, she said.
Its not great, but its an alternative, Surmaczewicz said of the rinks summertime use.
During Friday's 100 degree scorcher, Sumaczewicz and the rest of the rinks staff welcomed the Cove Island Park Playground staff and campers to spend the afternoon. The camp was going to send the kids home if the rink didn't have room for them, she said.
