“Many Americans are struggling to find the adequate support and treatment they need to lose weight and improve their health,” Mathur, an obesity medicine physician and pediatrician at Stamford Hospital, said in a statement. “A medical specialty in obesity allows me to focus my efforts on helping people identify the right combination of diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and medical treatments to get them on the track to a healthier weight.”

Obesity Medicine physicians provide a comprehensive approach to treatment using support from other healthcare providers, the statement said. To become certified, applicants must possess required training and experience, meet continuing medical education requisites, and pass an exam. Each certification is valid for seven years.

Mathur is involved in numerous obesity education and prevention programs in the community, including her work as chairwoman of Childhood Obesity Prevention and Intervention Task Force and director of Kid’s Fitness and Nutrition Services, the statement said.
