Reid, a long time gymnast for Arena Gymnastics in Stamford, is pursuing another exciting adventure this summer. She has been accepted into the summer STEM program at Brown University. Students selected for the two-week residential science program at the Ivy League institution in Rhode Island will immerse themselves in STEM subjects and gain the foundation necessary for further success in science and engineering.
“I can’t wait to go,’’ said Reid, a high honors student at Dolan Middle School. “I’d like to go to Brown or some other top school after I graduate to study a STEM related subject.”
Reid has developed some creative fundraising strategies to pay for tuition at the Brown program, which exceeds $4,000. She launched a Go Fund Me page (click here for the link), is selling t-shirts (click here) and has illustrated a book authored by her mother, Nadene, about the challenges with self esteem that face children of color. “I see myself having a career in a STEM field and hopefully going to Brown will allow me to narrow down my specific interests,’’ Carlee said. “I selected mechanical engineering as my area of study for the summer. I think it’s going to be interesting.”
Last year, Reid won the Level 8 all-around gymnastics state championship while competing for Arena. Click here to read a story about her gymnastics exploits.
Now, the bright, energetic Stamford girl wants to add to an equally strong component to her academic resume.
