July 4 Offers Beach, Baseball and More in Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. — July 4th means different things to different people. This year it meant baseball for Stamford resident Sal Macchio, who had the chance to head to Citi Field on Saturday to take in a game in the Subway Series.

“It means a long weekend, a time to celebrate and hoping the Yankees beat the Mets,” Macchio said as he relaxed on a Cove Island Park bench.

For Christine Blanche, this weekend is about her three favorite colors: red, white and blue. With her house decorated for Independence Day, Blanche says she will have a family cookout and, of course, end the night with fireworks. “It’s one of my favorite holidays,” Blanche said. “It’s the official start of summer, not Memorial Day.”

Harold Barreo was showing off his athletic abilities by doing cartwheels and backflips at the beach and taking advantage of the long weekend by going on a road trip. His destinations included Jones Beach, N.Y.; Seaside Heights, N.J.; and Hartford.

For those interested in celebrating the history of Independence Day, take a trip to Fort Stamford on Westover Road. Now a State Archaeological Reserve, the fort was used to protect the people of Stamford and Greenwich from possible British invaders.

The fort was built in 1781 and was manned the last two years of the Revolutionary War under Brigadier Gen. David Waterbury of Stamford. More than 700 state troops were stationed at the fort, according to a plaque at the park.
