Abilis Supporters Walk, Talk at Greenwich Point

Afton Fraser of Greenwich felt the support of the Abilis community during Sunday’s Walk in the Park at Greenwich Point.

People were checking out a book Fraser recently published, “Point to Happy.’’ She  wrote it with her mother, graphic designer Miriam Smith, and her sister, Margo Smithwick. “My mother wanted a book for my son, Griffin, and we couldn’t find a book for children with autism,’’ Fraser said. “We thought, ‘Why don’t we make one?’ ’’

Fraser displayed copies of her book as Abilis supporters prepared to walk about a mile around the park. Hundreds of walkers came out to support the group, which has served people of all ages with autism, Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities since 1951. The group, which has hosted a walk every year since 2006, also provides advocacy and support for families. Abilis has offices in Greenwich and Stamford but also serves Westchester residents.

“It’s so heartwarming to see so many people out here supporting us,’’ said Fraser, who is also an actress. “There’s so much more information out there about autism and other disabilities. Organizations like Abilis are a god-send.”

FOX News anchor Gretchen Carlson served as honorary chairperson for the walk. Also attending were Greenwich First Selectman Peter Tesei, U.S. Rep. Jim Himes and State Rep. Alfred Camillo.

Greenwich’s Dianna Downs Smith, chairperson for the walk, asked Carlson to take part. They met several years ago when their children attended pre-school together. “I knew she’s a very busy person,’’ Smith said. “I’m glad she was able to do it.”

Smith said the walk has had nearly 1,000 participants in the past, but she was unsure of the number at Sunday’s event. “I’m very proud to be doing this event,’’ Smith said. “I think it’s great that we’re able to raise awareness about what Abilis does. They are a tremendous resource and I’m glad so many people have come out to support it.”
