This increase is part of Mayor David Martin’s promise to raise the city’s minimum wage to $15 an hour ahead of the state’s 2023 deadline.
Connecticut’s minimum wage was raised to $11 an hour on Monday, October 1 and will increase by $1 each year to reach $15 an hour by 2023. Stamford’s minimum wage will reach $15 by 2021, officials say.
This minimum wage increase will affect more than 450 city employees, nearly half of which previously made less than $12.50 an hour. In addition to boosting the wages of employees making less $12.50 an hour, those making between $12.50 and $20 an hour have also received a graduated pay increase to scale the compensation of higher-paying jobs with the new minimum wage.
While wage increases vary based on current pay, the city has plans to implement a base wage of $15 an hour by this time next year. However, this wage increase does not affect private businesses operating in Stamford.
“Raising the floor for our lowest-paid workers lifts Stamford’s economy for everyone,” said Martin. “This increased wage provides breathing room for residents and families who invest back into Stamford’s community by buying things they need at local businesses. These workers need economic relief as the cost-of-living increases across the nation, and I am proud to have implemented this wage increase in Stamford as quickly as possible.”
