David Balek, 38, was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, possession of a sawed-off shotgun, using fraud to obtain a controlled substance, second-degree forgery and engaging police in pursuit. Balek, who is currently incarcerated on unrelated charges, was held on a $100,000 bond.
The arrest stems from an incident on July 13, 2015 when a Walgreens pharmacy on Bridgeport Avenue in Shelton reported that a customer attempted to have a fraudulent prescription filled, police said.
Officers were contacted by the pharmacy when the suspect, later identified as Balek, came back to the store in an attempt to pick up the prescription, police said.
Officers located Balek in the parking lot of the pharmacy and attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop of the vehicle, police said. The operator did not stop, however, and engaged officers in a pursuit and was able to elude them, according to police.
A short time later Ansonia police located the vehicle unoccupied in their town blocking a driveway and notified Shelton police, according to police reports.
A follow-up investigation led to the discovery of a sawed-off shotgun underneath the hood of the vehicle and the fraudulent license used to attempt to obtain the prescription at Walgreens, police said.
DNA evidence linked Balek to the incident, and Shelton police obtained an arrest warrant for him pursuant to the investigation, according to police. He was arrested on Wednesday, Jan. 13.
