Snow Blankets Area as Towns Dig Out

The snow on the ground and the chill in the air seemed so inviting for Isabella Trifero. The 20-year-old, home from college for holiday break, spent part of her afternoon in Irwin Park in New Canaan riding sleds and snowboards, enjoying the wintry day, and reliving her childhood. Well, she did for a while, mostly watching her pals at play. "I'm just going to stay here," said Trifero, finding a snowy seat where she could rest.

Sunday's snowstorm kept residents busy with snowboards, shovels and snow blowers on Monday as Fairfield County communities continued to dig out after the winter weather system dumped more than a foot of snow in most areas.

As of 8 p.m. Monday, more than 17,000 Connecticut Light & Power customers statewide were waiting for crews to turn the lights back on. "The high winds are really hampering our efforts," Katie Blint, a spokeswoman for CL&P, said.

The winds also proved tricky for crews who had to clear New Canaan's streets, said Mose Saccary, the public works department's superintendent of operations. Saccary said his 25 workers did a great job at keeping roads passable. "They hung in there all night. They did a great job and kept things running," he said.

Crews in Greenwich were expected to be out Tuesday to clear more remote roads, said Dan Warzoha, the town's emergency management director. Most roads were clear Monday, though some work remained to be done. "It was a good snowstorm. I hope it's a few years before we have to [go through] it again," Warzoha said. "It was a true nor'easter blizzard that New England is famous for. It lived up to its reputation."

Paul Milositz, the emergency management director and fire chief in Wilton, said his town's public works department worked hard to clear the streets. Only "three or four" roads were still closed in Wilton on Monday evening, he said. "Things are kind of winding down, and we're trying to get back to normal," he said.
