The City of Norwalk has its hands full with all of the snow that fell overnight. Therefore, there has been a change in plans.
"The snow emergency is going to remain in effect until at least 6 p.m." Thursday, said Hal Alvord, director of the Department of Public Works. Vehicle owners are asked to get their cars and trucks off city streets. Vehicles left on the city's snow emergency routes may be ticketed or towed.
Alvord said the city is making progress clearing the roads. "The main roads we're doing fairly decently, on as far as getting them cleared down to the asphalt," he said at 4 p.m. "We've got a lot of pushbacks to do; that means there's still snow piled in some of the travel lanes and along the curbs. Secondary streets are a real challenge. There are some we haven't even made the first pass on yet."
Alvord said he consulted with Superintendent of Schools Susan Marks on the decision to close Norwalk schools Thursday.
The National Weather Service says 16 inches of snow fell in Norwalk. The service issued a statement at 6 p.m. predicting scattered snow showers "at least through the early evening hours." Snow is not expected to accumulate.
