Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms at about 2:30 p.m. that were moving toward Lake Carmel and Connecticut. Cloud to ground lightning, hail and strong winds were possible Saturday afternoon.

It may not be the last storm of the day. A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect for all of Fairfield County as well as of all Connecticut until 9 p.m. Saturday, the weather service said.

Also, as hot and humid conditions continued, as they have for the entire week, a heat advisory was in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday, the weather service said.

Heat index values of 95 to 100 -- or how hot it feels -- were possible with temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s combined with dew points in the low 70s.

Residents were cautioned to take extra precautions if work or spend time outside:

  • Reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
  • Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
  • Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool or shaded location.

If you need an air-conditioned location, head to a library, mall, movie theater or other public building. To find special cooling centers, call 211 or visit the 211 website.

People who are outside in the heat could suffer fatigue, sunstroke, muscle cramps and heat exhaustion and/or heat stroke.
