FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — A flood watch is in effect for Fairfield County until Thursday evening, as heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to hit this afternoon.

There will be occasional rain before 1 p.m., followed by showers and possibly a thunderstorm this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Rain could be heavy at times, before gradually decreasing from west to east into the evening. There will be areas of fog, and an east wind around 17 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent.

A total rainfall of around one to two inches is expected, with locally higher amounts possible with the thunderstorms. The new rainfall could exacerbate already swollen rivers and streams, and creates the potential for river flooding, as well as urban and small stream flooding. Those who live in areas prone to flooding should be prepared.

Showers will continue Thursday night, mainly before 1 a.m. There will be patchy fog before 10 p.m., and the low will be around 42. The chance of precipitation is 80 percent.

There could be more rain on Friday, where there is a 40 percent chance of showers, mainly after 2 p.m. It will otherwise be cloudy, with a high near 49. The southwest wind will be around 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Friday night will see a 30 percent chance of showers before 8 p.m. It will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 34 and wind chill values between 25 and 30.

The weekend is expected to be nice. Saturday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 53, and Saturday night will be mostly clear with a low around 32. Sunday will be sunny, with a high near 59. Sunday night will be partly cloudy with a low around 41. It will continue to warm up next week, with a high near 67 expected on a sunny Monday.
