More than 70 inches of snow fell on the area, with storms and cold temperatures lasting well into March and April. Residents endured more than 12 snowstorms over the winter months.
The constant snow, sleet, freezing rain and low temperatures caused multiple problems throughout Connecticut last winter. Frigid temperatures disabled a train in Westport in January, stranding about 200 passengers for hours without heat or electricity.
In February, Gov. Dannel Malloy was forced to declare a salt emergency after the state ran out of enough of the ice melter to handle the amount of snow it was receiving. The snowstorms also canceled several days of school for the area’s students and led to numerous accidents on Connecticut’s roadways.
Though the state braced for the possibility of a major snowstorm right before Thanksgiving, Fairfield County has yet to experience a major winter weather event so far this season as the year comes to an end.
The National Weather Service predicts that the area will likely not see a repeat of last year’s weather in 2015. While precipitation is predicted to be higher-than-average, temperatures throughout the New England region are also expected to be warmer than average.
