Bacterial Infection With Unusual, Serious Symptoms Prompts CDC Warning A bacterial infection is appearing nationally with unusual and serious symptoms according to federal authorities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has just issued a Health Alert warning that the rare illness, caused by a strain of Neisseria meningitidis bacteria, has a higher fatality rate than normally seen with meningococcal infections. Mosquitoes Carrying West Nile Virus Found in CT Mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus have been confirmed in a Connecticut park, officials announced. The City of Hartford reported this week that two mosquitoes trapped at Keney Park on Tuesday, Sept. 14 tested positive for the virus. The Connecticut Department of Public Health announced Tuesday, Aug. 31, that two Connecticut residents from New Haven and Fairfield counties have tested positive for the virus; the first two cases this season. The patients are between 70-79 years of age and became ill during the third week of August with meningitis and meningoencephalitis, the department said.
