19: Study Shows Chance Of Winter Surge That Could Be Worse Than Delta Variant
With the weather cooling down and crowded indoor holiday season gatherings fast approaching, a new study is showing that there could be a winter surge of COVID-19 cases that could rival the earlier emergence of the Delta variant. According to a newly released study, researchers are predicting that there is at least a 30 percent chance that states could experience a surge of new infections that could exceed the numbers seen during the spike in cases in mid-September during the variant. With activities moving indoors, there is expected to be a surge in cases, though with more Americans getti…

19: Virus Was In Five States Before First Official Cases Reported, New Research Reveals
New research has found that the COVID-19 virus was circulating in at least five states for months before the first case was officially reported in the United States. According to a National Institutes of Health study published Tuesday, June 15 in the Clinical Infectious Diseases journal found that people in five states were infected with the virus in December 2019 and early in 2020 before the pandemic truly began last year. Researchers said that there was evidence of infection in nine out of 24,079 people whose blood samples were taken between Jan. 2, 2020, and March 18, 2020, suggesti…

19: FDA Approves Home Test, Calls Moderna Vaccine 'Highly Effective'
The Food and Drug Administration approved the first over-the-counter COVID-19 test involving a nasal swab that provides results in under a half-hour and is now likely to give an OK to Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine, which it dubbed “highly effective." The new home test for COVID marks the first that doesn’t have to be sent to a lab to receive the results. Health officials with the FDA have authorized more than 225 diagnostic tests for COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, including more than 25 tests that allow for home collection of samples, which are then sent to a lab for testing. “By …

19: Want To Be Hired As A Contact Tracer? Here Are Online Instructions For That
With states recruiting “armies of tracers” to combat the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, a new online training program has been created to help bolster the ranks. The five-hour online course created by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health went live this week, which will provide users with instruction on the basics of tracing and isolating people who came into contact with COVID-19. Since the pandemic struck in early March, lawmakers have stressed the importance of “testing, tracing, and isolating” people who contract COVID-19 or come into contact with people who have been …

19: Connecticut Partners With NY's New Contact Tracing Program
Amid the ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that the state's contact tracing pilot program, with leadership from billionaire former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, will begin in the coming weeks. The ambitious initiative will become a "playbook" for countries and other states, Bloomberg said, adding New York will share details with any location around the world. The program will operate through the next flu season, and it will be implemented in coordination with tristate neighbors New Jersey and Connecticut. Bloomberg joined Cuomo …
