Young Golfers Shine at Silvermine

Many aspiring golfers can go a lifetime hoping to stick the pin on the 18th hole with a perfect tee shot, and it never happens. But it seemed like every young player that took a shot on the final hole did just that at the Metropolitan Golf Association's junior tournament at Silvermine Golf Club in Norwalk. The tournament featured more 100 young golfers ages 7 to 18, including nearly 30 from Norwalk, Darien, Wilton, New Canaan, Westport, Weston, and Greenwich.

"[Competition] is pretty tough in these tournaments," said golfer Jackson Kleinert, 15, of Greenwich. "It varies in every tournament. Silvermine is a very short course, so you don't need a lot of muscle. You need more knowledge." Kleinert had a disappointing day, shooting an 84. He won an MGA junior event last summer at Burning Tree in Greenwich.

Miles McQuillen, 11, of Norwalk, won the youngest age group with an impressive 34 for nine holes. Sean Fahey of Darien and Austin Alianiello of Westport were the best local finishers in the oldest age group, tying for third at 72. Silvermine has hosted an MGA junior event for 11 years, drawing players from across Connecticut and New York.
