Y Encourages Kids to 'Tri' Their Best

The Westport Weston Family YMCA encourages children to "tri" their best Sunday morning. The Strong Kids Triathlon for children ages 3 and up will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Staples High School.

"At the Westport Weston Family Y, our goal is to strengthen the foundations of community . . . and one of the ways we accomplish this is by nurturing the potential of kids and promoting healthy living,'' said Jacquie Tumminia, a senior director at the Y.

"This is a community event with a focus on our children," says Tumminia. "The Family Y is offering a safe environment for a bit of friendly competition and a good deal of fun."

Children participating in the Strong Kids Triathlon will be grouped by age. The first race starts at 8:30 a.m. for children ages 10 and older. They will swim 150 meters, ride bikes for 2.5 miles and run for 1 mile. For 6- to 9-year-olds, there's a 75-meter swim, 1.25-mile bike ride and half-mile run that starts at 9 a.m. There's also a 100-meter dash for 3- to 6-year-olds to give younger children an opportunity to demonstrate their athletic abilities.

All participants will receive a T-shirt and medal. Triathletes will compete for age-group awards. Check-in for all events begins at 7:30 a.m.
